Opening Your Pool for the Summer Season: Step-by-Step Guide

After sitting unused through Adelaide’s cooler months your pool can look a little different when you uncover it for summer. There may be leaves on the surface, cloudy water, a bit of algae around the edges or a level that has dropped more than expected. It is tempting to simply remove the cover, add some chlorine and jump in.

Usually, though, it is worth taking a little more time.

A proper pool opening in Adelaide can help get the water clean, balanced and ready for swimming before the really hot weather arrives.

1. Remove and clean the pool cover

Start by carefully removing the cover and checking for leaves, dirt and standing water.

Try not to let all that debris fall straight into the pool. Clean and dry the cover before storing it somewhere protected. It is one of those jobs that is easy to forget, but a dirty cover can become a problem when you need it again.

2. Check the pool and equipment

Before turning everything on, take a quick look around the pool.

Check the skimmer box, pump, filter, chlorinator and other equipment for obvious damage or blockages. Make sure valves are in the correct position and look for anything that appears loose or unusual.

If your pool equipment has been sitting unused for months, don’t assume it will all start working perfectly straight away.

3. Clean out the pool

Remove leaves and larger debris with a pool net, then brush the walls and floor.

If there is visible algae or a build-up around the waterline, deal with it before trying to balance the water. Vacuuming may also be necessary, particularly if sediment has settled on the bottom.

The cleaner you can get the pool before balancing it, the easier the rest of the process tends to be.

4. Test the water

This is the part that should not be skipped.

Test the pool water chemistry in Adelaide for pH, alkalinity and sanitiser levels. Depending on the pool and its condition, you may also need to check calcium hardness and stabiliser.

Don’t simply add chemicals because the water looks cloudy. Testing first tells you what the water actually needs.

5. Run the filtration system

Run the filtration system after the water has been checked and the necessary adjustments have been made. If the pool has been sitting for a long time, the filter may need cleaning or backwashing. Keep an eye on the water over the following day or two.

Cloudiness that does not clear, persistent algae or unusual water colour can indicate that the pool needs more than a basic seasonal clean.

6. Get ready for Adelaide summer

Adelaide summers can be long and hot, which means your pool will soon be getting plenty of use. Opening it properly at the beginning of the season gives you a chance to identify equipment issues, correct water chemistry and deal with problems before they become more expensive.

If your pool needs more than a routine clean, Eveclear Pools Adelaide can help get it ready for the swimming season, so you can spend less time worrying about the water and more time enjoying it. Lets chat!
